My reading group activity By Yvette

Ruby Group 1
Title: GHB
School Journal Part 3, Number 2, 2006

Learning Intention
I am learning to link prior knowledge and experiences to the texts I read

1. How do the bagpipes link to historic times?
Patriotic songs were played on the bagpipes to fire up the soldiers when they were at war with England.

2. What are the requirements for playing the bagpipes?
A strong pair of lungs and a lot of air to produce a steady, loud sound on the bagpipes

3. At what age did Nick learn to play the bagpipes?
He was 3 years old when he first heard the bagpipes at a fair, ever since then he wanted to play the bagpipes. He loved the loud noise.

4. What is a chanter?
A small pipe with finger holes on which the melody is played to get used to the fingering.

5. Why was Nick disappointed when he started to play the bagpipes for the first time?
Because only a few squawky sounds came out.

6. How long did it take Nick to perfect his playing?
It took about half a year for Nick to master them.

7. What are some of the activities that have to be co-ordinated when playing the pipes?
*The leather bag has to be inflated by blowing through the blowpipe.
*The elbow has to apply steady pressure so that air can travel up into the drone pipes and down into the melody pipe to produce a sound.
*The melody must be played with fingers of both hands.
*The music must be learnt because you cannot read music when you are marching.
*The drone pipes must be held carefully so that they don’t slip and poke someone in the eye.

8. What events did Nick play for?
*A Scottish dance evening
*A fair
*An opening for a new part of the school when the Governor-General visited.
*Before a rugby game.

9. Why is practising the bagpipes important?
If you don’t play the bagpipes often, the reeds dry out and it’s hard to bring them back to the right moisture level. The drone pipes can also get out of tune if the pipes aren’t played everyday.

10. What are the parts to bagpipes?
*Leather bag.
*Drone pipes.
*Blowpipe.
*Melody pipe (chanter)

11. How many notes are played on the bagpipes?
9 different notes.

12. How is the Queen of England woken up each morning?
The Queen of England has a personal piper who wakes her up most mornings. He plays while walking up and down the castle lawn under her bedroom window.

A fact?
The sound of the bagpipes can carry up to 9 kilometres.

My Argument - Should Panmure Bridge School have a cafeteria By Yvette

Should Panmure Bridge School have a Cafeteria?
To me, cafeteria food smell and tastes really good. With all the chicken sandwiches, fruits and vegetables, drinks and hot beverages. All of that sounds delicious to me. I truly believe that we should have a cafeteria at Panmure Bridge School.

Firstly, I believe a cafeteria will save time for students to get to school instead of buying unhealthy food from bakeries and lolly shops, when students could order food from the cafeteria at school. As a student at Panmure Bridge I believe a cafeteria will be great, because my mum or I don’t need to get up in the morning to make lunch, instead I could bring some money to school and order food from the cafeteria.

Secondly, I believe that a cafeteria will give someone in the community, or student a job. I believe that Panmure Bridge School should have a cafeteria, because it teaches students skills as in cooking, and maths,  for example if the students or someone else runs the cafeteria learning to be cashier would be a life skill. It is a good experience for first timers.

Thirdly, the cafeteria could provide healthy food and nutritious food since the teachers, principal and you would want to look out for your health. Also the teachers, principal and you could ask for the ingredients on the food so if people are allergic to certain food they would know what to buy and not buy.

These are my reasons as to why Panmure Bridge School should have a cafeteria . Overall, I believe that Panmure Bridge School should have a cafeteria because if they bought food at the cafeteria it could save time for students to get to school, It could also give someone in the community or a student a job as well as serve healthy and nutritious food. That is why I believe Panmure b Bridge School should have a cafeteria.

My Argument - Should homework be compolsary By Yvette

Should Homework Be Compulsory
Introduction: Knowledge
Should homework be compulsory?. I believe homework should be compulsory because it helps you gain knowledge in your learning so you can improve in your tests and grades. I know i would want to get better in my grades and tests.

Argument 1: Education
I strongly believe that homework helps your education by helping you remembering knowledge that you didn’t know and using it in any kind of test, also it helps you reinforce your learning at home. When you do your homework at home you will always be challenged by something hard. At Panmure Bridge School I like having something challenging in my homework so I can remember that and if it is in my tests I would be set for success.

Argument 2: Parents/Language
Also homework helps your parents get involved with your learning. It could also build a relationships with your teacher and your parents. Your parents could also encourage you with your homework if you stuck on a math problem. When your parents come from a different country and speaks another language, it gets your parents involved with your learning and it also helps your parents learn english and the faster they learn english, the faster they could help you with your homework, without your mum or dad struggling to talk to you.
Argument 3: Maths sites/Future
Also your teacher can set you up with maths sites so you can improve in your grades and tests. At Panmure Bridge School we are setting up a Wireless network connection in panmure so students can finish off their work and go on maths sites.

Conclusion
Those are my reasons why Panmure Bridge School should have homework. Overall, I believe that Panmure Bridge School should have homework because It could help you with your education, It could also get your parents involved with your learning and your teacher can set you up with math sites. That is why I believe Panmure Bridge School should have homework.
